John U. has performed as a soloist, collaborator and composer throughout the United States and beyond. He holds a Master's in Piano Performance from Indiana University where he studied with legendary pianist Menahem Pressler. He as held solo appearances in venues such as the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts (Jacksonville, FL), Columbia University (New York), Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple (Oak Park), the Centro Municipal Integrado Pumín (Spain) and Symphony Center (Chicago), as well as for live television and numerous radio stations worldwide. As a collaborator he has performed in a myriad of styles including classical, pop, Latin, folk and world music, including concerts with Grammy Award-winning artist Michael Spiro, Dominick DiOrio, and others. He has written and performed music for the stage, with his 2014 score for Silent Theatre Co.'s production of Nosferatu called "masterful" (Chicago Theatre Review) and "invaluable" (Chicago Reader). He is currently an active performer, teacher and director in New York City.
John has a deep passion for teaching, and believes in the importance of sharing the joy of music. John has helped many students achieve greater expressive freedom, and he believes in imparting the fundamental techniques needed for a student to develop towards whatever goal they wish to achieve. He believes that an efficient and conscientious approach to the instrument is the bedrock to any sustainable and fulfilling experience of playing piano, whether those aspirations be amateur or professional.
