Joey R. is a dedicated and versatile musician and piano teacher with experience teaching students from pre-elementary through college level. Known for guiding musicians at all stages of their musical journey, Joey works primarily as a Musical Director in the New York theater community. His background as a classical pianist deeply informs his understanding and teaching of a wide range of genres, from classical to pop and contemporary styles.

After earning his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, with a minor in Music Technology, from the University of the Arts, Joey immediately joined the piano faculty at his alma mater. Shortly thereafter, he was brought on as the Music Supervisor for the university's annual festival of new musicals. In this role, Joey worked closely with composers, lyricists, music directors, and students, providing mentorship and insight into the collaborative process of musical theater.
Passionate about giving students genre-specific experience, he spearheaded a program that involved students from the School of Music in the processes behind these new musicals. This initiative gave students hands-on experience in various behind-the-scenes roles, such as Music Copyist, Transcriptionist, Score Supervisor, Music Director, and Music Assistant, exposing them to a wide range of careers in the music industry and broadening their understanding of what a sustainable career as a musician can look like.

Currently, Joey teaches on faculty at AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic Academy), CAP21 at Malloy University, and Pace University in the Theatre Department. His extensive experience working with vocalists, particularly in the musical theater world, allows him to seamlessly integrate piano, voice, and musical theory into dynamic, genre-spanning lessons.

Joey believes that once you begin your journey in music, you become a lifelong musician, regardless of whether or not you choose to pursue it professionally. Building a strong technical foundation equips students with a "toolbox" to explore any genre they choose, making the music that excites them feel more accessible.
Whether working with beginners or advanced students, Joey tailors his lessons to help each student thrive at their own pace, empowering them to approach music with confidence and joy.
