Teaches in English
Sara is a cellist and teacher with a rich international background. Equally enthusiastic about teaching children and adults, she is well-versed and comfortable teaching and playing in all areas of classical music, from baroque to contemporary to improvisation, and solo to orchestral to chamber music.
Born in Philadelphia, Sara completed her Bachelor of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She went on to pursue a graduate performance diploma at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in the Netherlands, as well as her Master of Arts and Postgraduate degrees from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel) in Belgium. Sara is currently a member of Manhattan School of Music’s Contemporary Performance Program ensemble, Tactus, through which she is pursuing a Master of Music degree under the tutelage of legendary cellist and pedagogue, Fred Sherry.
Sara’s other teachers and mentors include the late Lorne Munroe, former principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra cellists Derek Barnes and Ohad Bar-David, Jeroen Reuling, professor at the Queen Elisabeth Chapelle in Belgium, and principal cellist of the National Symphony Orchestra, David Hardy. She has performed in numerous prestigious settings such as with the Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris, with the Residentie Orkest in the The Hague, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and at festivals such as the Grachtenfestival, the Cello Biënnale, the Holland Festival (the Netherlands), the Festival Pablo Casals and the Encuentro de Música de Santander (Spain), the Enescu Festival (Romania), the Aurora Festival (Sweden), and the Klara Festival (Belgium).
Sara has been a dedicated cello teacher for over ten years. She has taught privately, both in person and remotely, teaches group classes, worked at Kinhaven Music School in Vermont, served as a guest professor at the Sichuan Conservatory in Chengdu, China, and teaches with New York City’s Harmony Program. Sara is a certified Suzuki cello teacher, and enjoys combining this background with traditional pedagogical methods as well. Sara’s joy of teaching
comes from supporting and getting to know students, first and foremost as people, as well as helping them to find and hone their unique voice through music.
Having been taught in both European and American cello-playing traditions, Sara is excited to pass along her deep love for the cello to the next generation of cellists. Sara plays on a cello built in 1880 in Mirecourt, France by Victor Joseph Charotte, and on a Swiss bow made by master archetier Johannes S. Finkel.
